last week concluded quite elegantly. thursday night was brawl night this week, since due to some relationship friction i had decided to 'bump' steff 'up' to friday night, in her words. gave her an unfortunate death note habit and watched the truman show, which rather blew me away in its excellence. granted, i haven't kept my eye on batman, but i got it spoiled to me in some review and am most definitely not happy about that.
saturday, did some shopping with the girlfriend and went to anna's picnic, which was surprisingly good, considering that anna was the one who orchestrated it and all. when i first arrived at the arboretum, i was indeed a little worried at the sight. the mix of humans crowded rather awkwardly around a picnic table, not speaking much, not eating much. soon, however, without even the aid of alcohol, we grew to a pleasant gathering of 10ish men and womenfolk: mike dire, anandh, albert, anat, anna, steff, anna's russian friend, mary li (augh), lauren rodda. we ate, frisbeed, wiffleballed, got ice cream pops. talked about the distant past, the recent past, and the present. while i had my doubts at first, i found myself surprisingly unwilling to leave four hours later.
the only problem was what ensued, which was an asian dinner followed by an impromptu asian party. i feel like it's notable that my sister and i actually managed to have some sort of civil discussion during this dinner at yangtze restaurant. while we've been known to get along, we've never actually talked about the internet or whatever.
the hosts of the aforementioned impromptu asian party had an eleven-year-old son. said son was fairly solid at first. he was polite, shy, and clearly impressed by my exorbitant aura of cool. however, as the evening progressed, and i attempted to make him feel validated, his solidity quickly betrayed his spoiled upbringing that mirrored the luxuriously huge house in which he lived. first, he attempted to distance himself from pokemon by claiming that he didn't like it; then he became engrossed in my copy of pokemon pearl; then it was the terrible but shiny collection of yu-gi-oh! cards; then it was the refusal to drop the point an attempting to shove all of his cards in my face; then it was the relentless showing off of the dragon ball z manga.
the thing is, i liked everything listed above. however, the kid didn't seem interested in discussing at all, but merely in displaying. i honestly don't know what he was trying to say. he didn't offer to play me in yu-gi-oh! or to build a deck together to test. he didn't tell me about his strategy or ask for tips. he didn't say much about the characters or the action in dragon ball but merely pushed the books under my nose. uh, thanks but no thanks, dude. i do not intend to say good things about a guy if my last words to him are 'don't touch me.'
six-thirty to twelve-thirty. those were the hours spent from home departure to home arrival for the asian event. definitely the worst asians-related evening since college began, possibly since even sophomore year or so.
today, sunday, was extremely tame. got up late, did nothing productive except my laundry and some lawnmower action. i am ashamed of myself for having thus wasted the day. in fact, i'm ashamed of myself for not having really enjoyed myself since some 31 hours ago.
i guess my weekend was kinda frontloaded. well, let's go for a better week and an even better weekend this time. dark knight? 'let's do this.'
